then don’t worry we will tell you how to do it.
Why humidifiers are so important today
A humidifier or vaporizer not only improves the living
condition but also helps in improving health conditions. In this time of the pandemic,
humidifiers can be very helpful. Let’s look at some of the advantages of having
humidifiers at home.
Protects the throat from infection
As we are staying inside our homes, the air may lose its
moisture. This can make the vocal cords scratchy and dry. This can lead to
throat irritations for a prolonged period thus, making your voice horse. If you
have had a recent encounter with the virus, you would know what we are talking
about here.
In such cases, humidifiers seem to a very effective tool.
They also control the spread of croup that mostly attacks infants and toddlers.
In this, the upper airways are inflamed which leads to hoarseness and barking
cough. This machine allows one to maintain humidity levels inside the room,
which helps in soothing and lubricating the throat. With time the dryness
reduces and inflammation of the voice box and windpipe decreases.
Good for your sinuses
The doctors have been recommending regular steam inhalation
for those fighting the corona virus. As the low humidity can dry the sinus
passage hence, leading to an increase in germ growth. This is a suffocating
feeling and can worsen with time. The discomfort can become intolerable and to avoid
that one must keep a humidifier close. Unlike what people believe, the humidity
in the air can ease breathing and make it comfortable for the patient.
The humidity keeps the mucous flowing and thus, reduces
suffocation caused due to the stuffed nasal passage.
Controls the spread of germs
How can a small humidifier help one control the spread of
germs? According to a study conducted by the National Academy of Sciences,
there is a strong connection between the survival and transmission of the
viruses and the dry conditions of your house.
Scientists have found that if there is low humidity in the
air, the capacity of the virus to survive increases hence, spreads easily. During
the season of flu transmission, having a humidifier can create a less favourable
environment for the microbes. This decreases the chances of catching the flu.
Yes, there are other things that one must do to protect themselves such as
regular use of sanitizing and disinfecting products, use of soap and water to
maintain hygiene, etc. Disinfecting the frequently touched points such as
doorknobs, tables, and keyboards can ensure your safety too.
Moisturizes the air inside the room
As the moisture inside the room comes to its optimal level,
the air starts to feel warmer and normal. The cold mists tend to dry the air
hence, making the environment a little chilly. In winter, this machine keeps
the room warm whereas in summers the temperatures are maintained to a
comfortable level. The air in the room has moisture that doesn’t allow your
lips and heels to feel chapped.
Ingredients you will require
Say no to detergents when it comes to washing the humidifiers. Even the hard brushes shouldn’t be used for cleaning it. For regular maintenance you need certain things:
Liquid chlorine bleach
Distilled white vinegar
Nylon dish brush/baby brush with small bristles
How to clean the humidifier
Depending upon the warm steam and cool mist, the humidifiers have a similar structure. Just some of the parts may differ. Some brands have parts that are dishwasher safe. For that, you will have to check the manual.
Unplug the machine. Empty the contents in the humidifier and disassemble the machine completely.
To clean the tank and the base, use two cups of undiluted distilled white vinegar. Give the contents in the tank a swish and wet the interior of the humidifier completely.
The vinegar-filled tank should be placed over the base. Let the vinegar drain through the tank to the reservoir to loosen the mineral build-up. Let the solution sit there for 15-20 minutes.
Remove the vinegar solution from the base and the tank and using a soft-bristled brush slowly scrub the edges and crevices. The smaller parts can be dipped in the white vinegar for a few minutes and they will come out clean.
Lastly, rinse all the parts. Before reassembling them, air dry all of them.
Wick filters are very sensitive. Mishandling them can disturb the antimicrobial coating of the paper.
To disinfect the humidifiers, you can use 1 teaspoon of
liquid chlorine bleach in a gallon of water. Use this solution to disinfect the
tank and base thoroughly. Later you can rinse and air dry it once again before
reassembling the parts.
